QlikView Server 9 SR 2 installation on Windows Server 2008

This is a guide suitable when you are about to install a QlikView Server 9 SR 2 on a Windows Server 2008 machine. 

Recommended prerequisites:

• Domain Service account, with never expiring password, which may look up users in the AD.

• A local administrator account for the server, which will perform the install (you can use the service account).

• Server with preferably static IP and a hostname.

Since most hardware today is 64 bit compatible, and Windows Server 2008 comes in 64 bit for the same price, you might as well always install 64 bit versions.

To download files you must disable ESC (Enhanced Security Configuration) in the management console, at least for Administrators. If you don’t need to do this, leave as it is. And if you turn it off, you should afterwards turn in back on again.

Add the Service account to the Local\Administrators group.

Let it install .NET 3.5, it works best, if it’s installed with the version that comes with it.

When installing QlikView Server 64 disable the IIS installations, by selecting custom install. We have experienced this has side effects. Also you might as well install OCX kit for later use.

When asked about an account, enter the service account. This way all QlikView services will run as this user. If the user needs to change password, and the server restarts, it will fail to start the QlikView services.

Many of the actions performed by the QlikView services, requires lookup of user credentials, therefore they need to be run via a domain account. Contrary to how it worked in 8.x.

Check that a user group called “QlikView Administrators” exists. If it does not, you must create it. And add the Service Account to that group. Also add any users that should be able to administer the QlikView Management Consoles.

In the Server management console make sure that the Firewall is turned off (we will configure it later). Turn off all 3 types, Local, Domain and Public.

When the installation and groups are setup go to Service in the management console and start the QlikView services, all 6 of them. Or you could choose to restart the server if you encounter problems starting them manually the first time.

Then go to Start -> QlikView -> QlikView Management Console or 

Start -> QlikView -> QlikView Enterprise Management Console and enter the QlikView server license. The license must not already be in use, while this will cause a license conflict.

Check that the installation works by visiting: http://localhost/Qlikview/ on the local server. Also test the installation from another computer on http://<servername>/QlikView/

To configure the firewall, you should know all the ports needed by the QlikView server and their function. If you want to run a cluster, you need to open additional ports.

You should create inbound rules for all these ports. 

These should be open for daily use:

• HTTP: 80 or HTTPS: 443
• QlikView Plugin/Ajax:  4747

To run the management consoles from external computer:

• QEMC and QMC 4780

And an outbound rule for:

• Also SMTP is on port 25 (Needed to be open if you want to send alert emails)

Cluster:

These must have in/outbound rules, since the servers need to talk to each others.

And these are needed for remote administration and clustering:

• Command Center: 4711, 4710
• Directory Service Connector: 4731, 4730
• Distribution Service: 4721 (default SNMP port). 
• QlikView Server: 4748
• QlikView Web Server: 4720, 4750

Add the servers to the cluster via the Cluster tab under QVS Management:

Share a qvw files location from the primary server so it’s reachable from the other. Preferably use some networked storage.
