How to setup a secondary QlikView server to do reloads
With the release of QlikView 8 it became possible to setup of split QlikView servers, one that handles reloading of documents and one the serves documents. With QlikView 8.x this was a daunting task, where many .xml config files needed to be edited. Now with QlikView 9 it became manageable setting it up. Only a little tweaking is needed and no more xml config file editing.
According to QlikView you only need a single license to do this. Because you enter the QlikView Server license on one server and the Publisher license on the other. Although I would prefer to have 2 publisher licenses, since the Server Performance monitor apps needs to be reloaded on the document serving server.
Since we need the Publisher license this off course means that you have to have the Enterprise Edition.
I've run this setup at one of our largest clients, and found that in environments where multiple reloads are performed each hour, then this works many times better than the normal setup. Usually we got error messages on a daily basis, because reloads failed, now we get none!
The tutorial:
Installation of dual servers for QV01 and QV01, QV02 is main QlikView server, while QV01 only handles data collection, ETL, reload and saving documents to QV02.
Installation
On QV02 the full QlikView package is installed as usual. Publisher license must not be entered. Only user documents can be reloaded.
QV02 is installed as usual.
On QV01 only following parts are installed:
- QlikView Directory Server Connector
- QlikView Distribution Server
- QlikView Management Servic
- QlikView Publisher Command Center Service
- Enter Publisher license
The QlikVIew files on QV02 need to be in a shared folder. Accessible by the user running as QlikView on both servers.
Server Setup
To install the components, make sure to select custom install. When installation is done open up the QEMC on both machines
Under System > Licenses > QlikView Publisher. Enter your publisher license on QV01.
Make sure that all paths on QV01 and QV02 used in:
System > Setup > Command Center > QlikVIew Server. > Folders are networked global folder.
No C:\ or D:\ paths, all should start with \\ or another global shared resource identifier.
In the management console of QV01 add QV02 as primary QlikView Server. Under System > Setup > Command Center > QlikVIew Server. There should only be one.
Setup Directory Service Connectors on QV01 in the same way as on QV02.
On QV01 add all tasks to this server, and make sure to set the mount to point to the main QlikView server QV02.
Make sure that on QV02 you have mounts setup in System > Setup > QlikView Servers > Folders > Mounted Folders
The Mounts will be where QV01 can store files.
Data collect jobs can reload as usual. But make sure that the paths are globally set. Use ..\Data instead of c:\Capana\QlikView\Data or write the full path to the share starting with \\ in all of your qvw files.
