Version Control support is coming in QlikView 10!

Ohh My God! A year ago I submitted this feature request for 10:

And today on beta test day, John Trigg introduced the "-prj" extension. This means that you can create a folder with the same name as your .qvw file (but ending with -prj), and then when saving qlikview, it will put the xml definitions of the sheets and objects into the folder. Since (almost) everything in the folder it text, you can know easely version control it using your favorite tool!

This is going to enable a big push for QlikView into the enterprise!

QV10 Versioning

Works in V10. Example:

1. Create C:\MyApps\DemoApp-proj folder
2. Create C:\MyApps\DemoApp.qvw and save
3. Your script, object and module definitions will be created and updated in the -proj folder.

Now you can use SVN or similiar for joint development.

XML Document Layout

I'm also real excited about this feature, but have trepidations. QlikView had released revision control functionality in QV9 in the form of Export Document Layout, or the API function Document.ExportLayoutFile.

The unfortunate problem with using this approach is that the exported XML document when imported back into QlikView would lose a substantial amount of information (i.e. group sort orders, document number format specifications, variables created outside of the load script, and more and more). My biggest worry is that the -prj feature will simply reuse the ExportLayoutFile functionality.. which gives us almost nothing we can use for revision control.

I've also played around with the import/export functions and found those where not that usefull in everyday work. See my post on svn for how we done it so far.

The features seemed quite stable in the beta, but I guess we will have to wait and see if its up to the job. I do expect a few bugs in the functionality, but no big ones.
